As we step into 2025, it's time to look back at the remarkable journey of GOALPrime Organization Nigeria (GPON) through our 2024 Annual Report. At GPON, our vision is simple yet profound: a better humanity is possible. We strive to create a world where children, young people, and caregivers are safe, supported, protected, and empowered. Operating across Nigeria's conflict-affected regions—including Borno, Adamawa, Yobe (BAY states), Zamfara, Sokoto, Benue, Katsina, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—we reached over 1.6 million people in need last year. Despite escalating crises like floods, displacement, and insecurity, our team of 146 dedicated staff and volunteers delivered life-changing humanitarian aid. Here's a snapshot of our achievements, challenges, and the road ahead.
GPON is a national social enterprise non-governmental organization committed to humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, independence, and impartiality. In 2024, we expanded our footprint with new representation offices in Zamfara and Sokoto, while our Abuja headquarters drove advocacy and fundraising. Our programs span emergencies, nexus, and development, focusing on eight core areas: child protection, education in emergencies, nutrition, primary health, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), gender-based violence (GBV), life skills, peacebuilding, implementation research, common pipeline management, and socio-economic reintegration for conflict-affected children.
We served 35,516 people directly across eight states, with a strong emphasis on hard-to-reach locations where 55% of our technical professionals worked. Our holistic approach ensures age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, disability-inclusive, and gender-transformative interventions. Partnerships with donors like UNICEF, Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), ECHO, Solidarités International (SI), IOM, and Street Child Nigeria were pivotal, bringing in over 1.54 billion NGN (approximately $1 million USD) in funding.
In 2024, we reached 15,376 individuals (including 4,500 girls and 1,869 boys) with comprehensive child protection services in Monguno, Ngala, and Konduga LGAs of Borno State. Our efforts included case management for 40 at-risk children, providing food, non-food items (NFIs), and livelihood support. We facilitated birth certificates for 300 children in IDP camps, protecting them from risks like statelessness and exploitation.
Community engagement was central: Door-to-door sensitization, loudspeaker campaigns, and dialogues with leaders raised awareness on issues like abuse prevention and sexual violence reporting. We also delivered psychosocial support (PSS) through recreational activities in schools, benefiting 2,800 children, and life skills training for 200 adolescents to build resilience against trauma.
Education remains a lifeline in crises. We supported 897 conflict-affected children (547 girls, 350 boys) via the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Multi-Year Resilience Programme in partnership with Street Child Nigeria. Interventions included catch-up classes, accelerated learning programs, vocational training, and WASH facilities in schools.
In response to floods, we distributed 300 school kits with uniforms and sandals. We strengthened systems by training government stakeholders on emergency preparedness and coordinating with the Education in Emergencies Working Group (EiEWG). Despite challenges like destroyed infrastructure affecting over 107,000 children, our work promoted inclusive, quality education.
GBV services reached 2,520 survivors (2,109 girls, 799 boys) in Konduga and Monguno. Through case management, counseling, dignity kits, food aid, and livelihood support, we helped survivors rebuild confidence and independence. Community dialogues with 80 stakeholders addressed issues like early marriage and access to services, fostering collective action for safer environments.
WASH interventions were a cornerstone, reaching 2,056,138 people. We distributed 33,101 NFIs (hygiene, cholera, and SAM kits) to 198,606 individuals across six LGAs. Over 21 million liters of water were chlorinated for 1.4 million vulnerable people, preventing disease outbreaks.
Infrastructure wins included rehabilitating three motorized boreholes (serving 5,000 people daily), six hand pumps, and 10 blocks of communal latrines. We dislodged 80 latrine drop holes and trained 67 WASH committee members. Flood responses provided sanitation access to 4,035 people, while 82,000 IEC materials promoted hygiene to 410,000 individuals.
Our Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) addressed emergencies like floods in Maiduguri's Gubio Camp, supporting 1,662 people with PSS and protection monitoring. We also advanced communication for development, producing IEC materials, and analyzed social media for broader outreach.
GPON's success stems from our people. We filled 18 positions with over 2,000 applications (54% from women) and maintained an 87% retention rate. Investments in training covered safeguarding, security, project management, and digital tools. We fostered an inclusive workplace, emphasizing accountability and well-being.
Messages from our leaders encapsulate our spirit. Country Director Prof. Christopher Chinedumuije Oguegbu highlighted our adaptability amid conflicts and climate challenges, while Board Chairperson Ms. Onwunali Oluchukwu Favour praised our governance and partnerships.
Despite our impact, gaps persist. Our 2024 Gap Analysis shows we reached only 12% of education targets, 36% in WASH, and 0% in health and nutrition due to funding shortfalls totaling over $4.5 million. Protection funding met just 3.34% of needs. With needs growing—driven by floods, insecurity, and poverty—we urgently need more resources to bridge these voids.
In 2025, we'll build on ongoing initiatives, including social enterprises and innovative programs. Stories of resilience—from flood survivors regaining dignity to children thriving in safe schools—inspire us.
A better humanity is possible, but it requires collective effort. We thank our partners, donors, and team for making 2024 transformative. Join us: Donate, advocate, or partner to amplify our impact. Together, we can create lasting change.
