A Better Humanity is Possible

WASH, which stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, is a crucial area of focus for NGOs operating in the northeast region of Nigeria, particularly given the challenges posed by conflict, displacement, and other emergencies. The WASH concept in GOALPrime Organisation Nigeria (GPON) in this context involves comprehensive efforts to improve access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices among communities affected by crises Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states.

 

According to the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) by WHO and UNICEF, in 2021, an estimated 3.4M people in the BAY States lacked access to basic sanitation services, of which 2.8M were practicing open defecation, and 2.9M people lacked access to basic drinking water services. More so, 1.9M people were also dependent on unsafe and untreated water. To that extent GPON mitigates these conditions by supporting water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in six Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the BAY states especially hard-to-reach areas, with the intention of contributing to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which aims to achieve universal and equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for all by 2030. As such GPON has made significant progress in the LGAs toward ensuring universal access to basic WASH services. GPON’s contributions in 6 LGAs. The population practicing open defecation across the six LGAs had reduced by 65 per cent in 2022, and the population relying on unsafe water for drinking and domestic use had decreased by percent.

 

GPON’s concept of WASH activities in the northeast of Nigeria is not just about providing immediate relief; it's about building resilience, promoting sustainable practices, and improving the overall health and well-being of communities in the face of complex challenges. The concept integrates humanitarian response with long-term development goals to create lasting positive impacts.
