GPON Empowers Enumerators: DRR Training Boosts Disaster Assessment Capacity in Katsina and Zamfara

Disaster Risk Management

On January 22nd, 2025, GPON teams conducted an impactful training session in Katsina and Zamfara States to boost the capacity of enumerators for comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) assessments.

The training focused on familiarizing enumerators with Baseline Assessment tools and enhancing their knowledge of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies to ensure the successful management of disaster risks in schools.

Strengthening disaster resilience is critical, especially in regions vulnerable to environmental hazards. In Katsina and Zamfara States, GPON has taken significant steps by training enumerators to enhance their capacity in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) assessments. This training focuses on improving data collection, which is vital for informed decision-making and effective disaster response strategies.

The Urgent Need for Accurate DRR Assessments in Nigeria

Natural disasters can strike unexpectedly, leading to loss of lives and property. Nigeria faces various threats, including floods, droughts, and other climate-related events. Accurate DRR assessments help identify risks and create strategies to reduce vulnerability.

- Importance of Reliable Data: Comprehensive data allows for pinpointing areas most at risk.

- Informed Policy Making: Authorities can design better interventions with accurate information.

The Role of Trained Enumerators in Effective Disaster Response

Enumerators play a crucial role in gathering data during DRR assessments. They collect vital information that informs local governments and disaster response agencies on necessary action. A well-trained enumerator can make the difference between a successful response and a missed opportunity.

GPON's Commitment to Building Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction

GPON's training program emphasizes collaboration and skill-building. By enhancing the abilities of enumerators, GPON aims to create a network of skilled individuals ready to address and mitigate disaster risks effectively.

The GPON Training Program: Curriculum and Methodology

Key Modules Covered in the Katsina and Zamfara Training

The training program in these states included several key topics essential for effective data collection:

- Understanding DRR Principles: Core concepts and best practices.

- Data Collection Techniques: Methods for gathering qualitative and quantitative information.

- Risk Assessment Tools: How to use various tools and software for analysis.

Disaster Management

Hands-on Training Exercises and Practical Applications

Practical exercises took center stage, allowing enumerators to apply what they learned in real-world settings. This hands-on approach ensured they could translate training into effective practice.

Key Takeaways from the GPON Training Program

The training has significantly bolstered the skills and knowledge of enumerators in Katsina and Zamfara. They are now better equipped to collect and analyze data, which is vital for effective disaster management.

Together, we’re building resilient communities through education and disaster preparedness.
